Alexander Obregon is the chief operating officer for the Office of the Houston City Controller and Deputy City Controller for Houston. Alex is responsible for the office's day-to-day financial operations, oversees the fiscal affairs of the City’s $5 billion budget, and provides leadership on issues pertaining to the City’s finances.
Alex is also a lecturer of public finance at the University of Houston for the Master of Public Policy program and Certified Public Manager program. Prior to his appointment at the City of Houston, Alex was in the financial advisory services practice of Deloitte & Touche LLP where he provided Fortune 500 clients valuation and financial consulting services.
He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and a Master of Business Administration degree with a focus in finance from the University of Houston, where he was a Global Energy Management Institute scholar.
Alex currently serves on the board of directors as treasurer of the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, the board of directors of the University of Houston Alumni Association Foundation, the board of directors of Houston Haven, the advisory board of The Honors College at University of Houston, the advisory board of the Hobby School of Public Affairs, and the board of directors of Trinity Church Endowment Inc.
Alex was named one of Houston’s “40 Under 40” by the Houston Business Journal, one of 28 national public finance “Rising Stars” by The Bond Buyer, and was awarded the “Rising Star Award for Achievement” by the University of Houston Alumni Association, one of the highest honors bestowed by the university. He began his career working at Houston City Hall for Houston City Council.
Alex is married to Houston attorney Skyler Obregon, and they have one son.
